Andrew Mayer Cohen keeping things "Flashy but Classy."
For the latest installment in our ongoing music series, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Mayer Hawthorne, whose unique blend of hip hop, neo soul, and funk is taking him to all the right places (Pharrell Williams was a collaborator on his recent release). Speaking of which, his third album, “Where Does This Door Go,” is out now from Republic Records.
Tell us a little about the Mayer Hawthorne sound.
A friend of mine described the sound of the new album as “Steely Dan meets the Beastie Boys.” I’m from Ann Arbor, Michigan, so there’s a lot of soul and funk in my music, but I got my start as a hip-hop DJ.
How would you describe your look?
I call it “Flashy but Classy.” I learned to stand out from the crowd and be yourself from my great aunt, but to always keep it classy.
How has your look evolved over the past few years — and how much is it informed by the fact that you live in L.A.?
My pants have definitely gotten slimmer (laughs). I think it’s important to evolve, and my style has definitely changed a lot over the years, but the motto remains the same (see previous answer). L.A. is great — there are so many interesting people to look at.
What’s the one thing every guy should be wearing for Fall?
I’ve been wearing a lot of scarves with suit jackets. It’s fashion and function for me, since I’m a singer. It looks great and it keeps my vocal chords warm.
And how about something they should NOT be wearing?
You should wear what makes you feel good! But in general, I try NOT to wear: what everyone else is wearing.
What’s on your shopping list right now?
Custom clothing. Lately I’ve been going to the fabric store, picking out cool fabrics, and getting custom shirts and suits made. You can get it done for cheap and no one else in the world will have the same one.
What’s the best style advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t be afraid to take chances. I think everyone should have some old photos that make you say “what was I doing??”
Go-to drink?
Henny & Ginger Ale. I wrote a song about it for my last album. I’ve also got my own signature Umami Burger that incorporates Hennessy cognac.
Who would you like to see featured in our Men of Style series?
Pharrell Williams. I got to work with him on my new album and he’s definitely got his own awesome and very unique style.
