Next up in our New York Fashion Week series of sales inspired by the style of the street is GQ associate fashion editor Matt Sebra, a Philly native, budding street style star, and all-round good dude who oversees GQ.com‘s fashion content. We caught him looking sharp (and living smart) outside the shows. Head over to Gilt to shop his look, but first, a few words from the man himself.
How would you describe your look?
Menswear mullet. Business on top, party down below.
How differently do you dress for fashion week than everyday life?
I try to break out of my everyday office uniform a bit with new pieces or combinations I haven’t worn before. This week it’s things like pony hair slippers or waxed jeans. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t but I don’t have to worry about sticking out because every other guy is peacocking too – whether or not he admits it.
Best thing you’ve seen so far during Fashion Week.
Mark McNairy’s show. I really think it bumped him up to the menswear big leagues. That, and realizing I’m way taller than Justin Bieber.
Does working at GQ influence the way you dress?
Absolutely. I came to the magazine from a much more corporate environment and since then I’ve been chipping away at my old suit-heavy wardrobe. The magazine presents a smart mix of tailoring and sportswear in its pages and I think that combination has definitely seeped into my closet. Every day is a mashup of meetings, appointments and events, and sitting behind a computer for hours on end so what I wear needs to fit in the center of that daily Venn diagram.
Who are your style icons and why?
The band The Specials because they made suits look as badass as a moto jacket, Alain Delon because back in the day the man proved the simplest pieces (a mac jacket, a crew neck sweater) could be the most elegant, and Hedi Slimane because he changed the course of menswear once and is doing it again.
What’s on your shopping list right now?
Fall staples I can wear for the next six months which, for me, means a sharply cut herringbone tweed blazer, a pair of black Chelsea boots, and skinny wool ties.
Random bonus question: What’s the best thing about September?
I stand by my claim that there’s no place better to spend a September than NYC. Everyday the weather’s damn near perfect, pumpkin pie season is upon us, and, despite the long hours, crowds, and uptown/downtown hustle, it’s when fashion week happens—arguably one of the best perks of my job.
